Ovulation is the process in the menstrual cycle through which a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and discharges an ovum which that participates in reproduction. The entire process of ovulation is controlled by the hypothalamus of the brain and through the release of hormones secreted in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). A spike in the amount of FSH triggers ovulation and LH is released from the pituitary gland.

Normally, the cycle is a 28 day cycle. During the 14th day after a period, the ovum is released. This process is called ovulation and the days 12 to 16 after a period are said to be a woman’s most fertile period.
Knowing When You Are Most Fertile

- Usually on day 14, the egg is released and is waiting for the sperm to fertilize it.
- The egg has a lifespan of just 12 to 24 hours whereas a sperm can last for about 72 hours in a woman. Sex on day 12 and day 16 is important as it is the time that the woman has the highest chances for pregnancy.
Pregnancy Due Date Calculator
Your due date is calculated by adding 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period (assuming you have a 28 day cycle). Note that your menstrual period and ovulation are counted as the first two weeks of pregnancy. If you deliver on your due date, your baby is actually only 38 weeks old, not 40.
Please remember that your due date is only an estimate. Every pregnancy is unique and your baby will come when it’s ready. Remember to talk to your health care provider about your due date. On average only 5% of births take place exactly on the estimated due date. Most are born within a week either side of the estimated due date. A normal pregnancy can last anywhere between 38 and 42 weeks.
